As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold globally and here in Australia, we are facing tough and uncertain times.

For people with disability and people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds, the pandemic has been an incredibly difficult time as they are facing unique challenges.

The National Ethnic Disability Alliance would like to thank the government for their commitment to ensure the wellbeing of people with disability as the COVID 19 pandemic evolves.

We are grateful to the government for their commitment “to work with individuals, service providers, peak bodies and other stakeholders (to) respond to the evolving challenges presented by coronavirus.”

NEDA would like to specifically thank Senator the Hon Anne Ruston, Minister for Families and Social Services and Hon Stuart Robert MP, Minister for the National Disability Insurance Scheme Minister for Government Services, for including people with disability in all COVID-19 related decisions and measures.

As the peak organisation advocating for the rights of CALD Australians living with a disability, NEDA appreciates Minister Ruston’s decision to “provide a $90.7 million boost to support Australians with disability who are at risk amid the coronavirus outbreak to help with employment and other support services.”

We are also thankful to Minister Robert, for his decision to “work collaboratively to ensure appropriate safeguards and supports are in place for people with disability, their carers and the disability sector as a whole.”

In addition to the above, we acknowledge, as they do, that more work needs to be done to safeguard the disability sector and are willing to work collectively with the government to provide additional support to people with disability, their families and carers.
