‘Let’s Simplify’: enhancing interpreting in NDIS contexts

This project was funded by the Australian Government Department of Social Services from 2020 to 2024. It addressed the lack of resources available to support effective interpreting and translating for people with disability from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds to access the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Consultation with interpreters, translators, CALD people with disability and their families and NDIS service providers, identified key skills and knowledge needed. The project developed a specialised training program on ‘Interpreting in NDIS settings’ in collaboration with the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI) and RMIT which is on NAATI’s e-Learn platform here.

The project delivered 17 professional development sessions, most of them face-to-face, in WA, SA, Queensland and NT, reaching 622 participants, and six national seminars reaching 1,525 interpreters/ translators. Partnership with NEDA member organisations in WA, SA and Queensland, with NAATI, RMIT and the Australian Institute of Interpreter and Translator (AUSIT) networks, and with local National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) branches was key to successful delivery of the project.
